and speaking of a language to speak of clouds, a language to speak of clouds

a playground of perceptions with music, dance and 16mm film by ultrasound and the festina lente dance company directed by rfovetz

'perception cannot be viewed as the representation of an external reality but must be understood as the continual creation of new relationships within the neural network.'
-fritjof capra, the web of life

multiple fluid layers of reflections in tram windows.
the murmuring north sea.
the klang of unfamiliar territory.
a desolate ice-encrusted beach.
a swarm of small unfamiliar sounds.
the diffused rich blue evening light.

these are perceptions that transcribe the emergence of new senses, connections, relationships and possibilities. they form the beginning of 'a language to speak of clouds' once dreamt of by fractal geometry inventor dr. mandelbrot and inspire a personal language detailing a journey from expectation to wonder.

organized within a circular space around which the audience is seated 'a language to speak of clouds' takes one through a butoh-inspired trance triggered and sustained by waves of sound, luscious colors, and amoebic shadows and reflections created by interactions between movement, films and geometric decour. the new dance company festina lente (literally, to hurry slowly) premiered its 'a language to speak of clouds' in the korzo theater of den haag 1-2 oktober 1999. director rfovetz brings together ultrasound (featuring ovetz on bass and soundscapes, kirk laktas on guitaar and james alexander on viola) with legendary fellow texan filmmaker luke savisky and dancer/choreographer helen pokrovskaia to create a moving, resonant circular meditation on the perceiver perceiving, the tension of borders and the new wordless pathways that emerge. inspired by the sounds of the pacific ocean, ovetz formed the music group ultrasound with former stars of the lid (v.s., kranky records) member kirk laktas in 1994. they have since released four albums, one in 1997 with Staalplaat of Amsterdam and were joined in 1998 by james alexander. since relocating to den haag in 1996 and sitting in the audience of the north sea, rfovetz' sounds have accompanied his tubular environments and constructions, frequently in conjunction with movements by various dancers, in such locations as t'Paard, the Paradiso, and galleries, theatres and clubs in the netherlands, us, belguim, germany, austria and italy. he has also recorded for VPRO radio and writes on music for the Israeli cultural magazine 42 Maalot.
